Rebecca was the spouse of Isaac, who was the son of Abraham and Sarah according to the Bible. Moreover, Rebecca was the mother of Esau and Jacob. In the book of Genesis, Rebecca is mentioned first time in this book and considered as

“Daughter of Bethuel son of Mikah, who was the spouse of Abraham’s brother Nahor”

Rebecca was a grand-niece and second cousin to Isaac. Abraham had been searching for a wife for his son Isaac, although he was resistant for Isaac to wed a Canaanite while Abraham and his household were living in Canaan eventually. The assistant reached to a well and called upon that God would grant him victory in achieving his assigned task.

Consequently, he beheld that whoever adult lady supplied water for him and his camels would be God’s selection to be Isaac’s spouse. Since, the maid was appealing, encountered an attractive juvenile vestel girl named Rebekah, who in addition to providing water to the maid yet also supplied water to his camels, giving the mark to Abraham’s attendant that she was the assigned wife for Isaac. All the settlements were fixed between  Abraham’s maid and the father of Rebekah. The servant led Rebekah rear to Isaac, they got married but many years passed Rebecca could not have a child. Isaac appealed to God for his wife Rebecca and God replied to his prayer and Rebecca conceived (Genesis 25:21). She gave birth to Jacob and Esau, the first twins children according to the Bible(Genesis 25:22-24). Jacob and Esau laid the foundation of two striffed nations. 

While Rebecca was pregnant, God provided her prophecy. She had observed the twins growing in her womb fighting against each other and she inquired the Lord why they were scuffling. The Lord answered her that two nations were in her uterus and those nations would be opposite to one another. This prediction became a fact as Jacob became the father of Israel and Esau became the father of Edomites.

Significance of Rebecca’s Name

The name of Rebecca has Hebrew meaning ”to tie firmly” or “a noose”. Applicative to a female, the depiction intimates her attractive personality through which men are abducted. Whilst her name speculated, Rebecca was a woman of fascinating beauty. According to the book of Genesis, the young lady was very charming in aspects or figure, the virgin whom no man had familiar. Isaac did not even wish to specify her as his spouse due to the probability that other envious men could murder him to acquire Rebecca (Genesis 26:7)

Marriage of Rebecca and Isaac

Isaac was late thirty when his mother Sarah was died, Abraham departed his maidservant for searching his son’s wife to his native city Nahor. The attendant was given jewelery, clothes and gifts to present to the family of the coinciding bride. The servant was anxious about as the woman would retaliate against him, as he was about to start the voyage. Abraham pleaded his discomfort by telling the maid that he would be “discharged from this pledge” mentioned in Genesis 24:8 whenever the woman was reluctant to return with him. Throughout  his way of finding the bride, the servant prayed that;

“Lord, God of my commandant Abraham, make me victorious today, and show mercy to my master Abraham,” (Genesis 24:12)

Consequently, as the servant completed his devoted prayer, a woman appeared having a pot on her shoulder moved downward to derive to get water. The servant negotiated with Rebecca while drinking water from her vessel. After that, the servant met with father and brother of Rebecca and settled an agreement peacefully to accomplained her with him.

While reaching Abraham’s house, Rebecca looked at Isaac praying. She was engrossed with so devoutness and got off her camel and asked for his recognition. She covered her face as she recognized that he was her husband-to-be. Isaac married her in the cottage of his mother.

Rebecca’s Progeny

Rebecca remained infertile for a long time. Isaac prayed for her wife and God blessed her with children. Rebecca expected twin babies and she was astounished that 

“The babies fought with each other within her womb, and she said, Why is this circumstancing to me? So she asked the LORD” (Genesis 25:22)

The Lord answered that:

“Two nations are carrying in your womb, that people would be divided, the nation of one would be powerful than other and the old will assist the young.” (Genesis 25:23)

She was blessed with two sons, Esau was the first son and entitled a blessing while Jacob was a younger son. Isaac preferred his son Esau to Jacob and told him to go to the fields and bring something to prepare delicious food for Isaac. Rebecca was listening to their conversation and said to Jacob to bring two good young goats to cook a delicious meal for your father which he loves. In this way, Isaac would give  blessings to their younger son Jacob.

Rebecca prepared the delicious food and told Jacob to present it to your father by replacing his identity with Esau’s and to take the firstborn’s blessings. As Esau arrived with his delicious food, Isaac told him that his blessings were taken away decisively by his brother Jacob. Esau got angry and threatened to murder his brother. Rebecca exposed Esau’s plan to Jacob and instructed him to run away to her brother Laban till Esau’s anger calmed down and ignored what you had committed with him. (Genesis 27:43)

The name of the nation of Jacob was Isreal and Esau’s was Edomites which were fought against each other. Jacob was the favorite of his mother Rebecca while Esau was the favorite of his father Isaac and a fieldman having skillful hunting attributes while Jacob was a mild man having residence in a shelter or tent.

Rebecca was a beautiful and charming lady selected by God for Isaac. She was the woman of faith as she trusted the promises of God and agreed to go and spend her life in the promised land. She had bravery, endurance, power and Isaac loved her. Isaac and Rebecca both disliked Esau marrying the atheist Canaanite woman. Both trusted the promises of Abraham inherited to their successors, delighted with the magnificence of God and lived peaceful and prosperous life.

Rebecca was a mother in Israel, the nation of her beloved son Jacob and buried in in the cave of Machpelah according to Genesis 49:31. Rebecca believed that her elder son served the younger as God blessed her with prophecy.
